The Landes Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS) actively participates in the FIRE-RES project, an innovative international initiative intended to address the challenges posed by extreme forest fires in Europe.
This collaboration, which is part of the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, extends over four years (2021-2025) and is led by the Center for Forest Sciences and Technologies of Catalonia , in Spain.
An integrated response to extreme wildfires
Faced with the increase in intensity and frequency of forest fires due to climate change, the FIRE-RES project aims to develop a global fire management strategy. This integrated approach is based on innovative solutions and collaboration between various European actors, thus making it possible to more effectively protect ecosystems, populations and infrastructure.
The Landes, a territory particularly exposed to forest fires, benefit from their inclusion in this project by contributing to local actions which serve as a model on a European scale.
Living Labs: open innovation laboratories
One of the key aspects of FIRE-RES is its 11 Living Labsspread across Europe. These living laboratories constitute open innovation ecosystems, where the solutions developed are tested, deployed and adapted in real conditions. Thanks to a collaborative approach, Living Labs bring together representatives of the public and private sectors, researchers, businesses and citizens. This synergy ensures effective adoption of innovations and their sustainability.
As a stakeholder in the project, the SDIS des Landes participates in these experiments, adapting technologies and methods to the specificity of its forest territory, rich but vulnerable.
A shared ambition for the future
The integration of the Landes firefighters into the FIRE-RES project underlines their central role in the fight against extreme fires, while positioning the region as a key player in innovation in the prevention and management of forest fires. Drawing on scientific research, technological advances and international cooperation, FIRE-RES paves the way for lasting solutions to current climate and environmental challenges.
This partnership highlights the capacity of the Landes to combine tradition and innovation to protect its natural heritage while contributing to a more resilient Europe.
