Variable speed limit on this motorway to regulate car traffic

Regulate traffic to alleviate traffic jams. This is the objective of the “dynamic speed regulation device” deployed on a portion of the A62 motorway in between the La Brède interchange and the ring road, reports The South-Gironde Republican . The system has been applied since Wednesday November 27, 2024 on this 10 km section of expressway.

The decision was taken jointly by the State, Bordeaux Métropole and the Gironde departmental council with the stated objective of“optimize traffic flow capacity during the busiest hours”detailed the prefecture. The solution involves adapting the speed of vehicles to traffic conditions. Counting loops collect traffic data then, as soon as traffic becomes denser, a signal is sent to motorists to slow down, explains Southwest .

From 130 km/h to 70 km/h

The maximum authorized speed thus varies automatically. “depending on actual traffic conditions”specified the prefecture. On this section where vehicles can travel up to 130 km/h, motorists may be asked to reduce their speed to 70 km/h. The regulatory speed will decrease in steps of 20 km/h.

The initial authorized speed is restored when traffic conditions are deemed ideal. Motorists are warned that they are entering a section with a regulated speed. The local media indicates that for this purpose, 14 light panels were installed in the area affected by the system.
