Chanel lifts the veil on its 2024/25 Métiers d'art fashion show as the event approaches. Last summer, the Parisian fashion house announced that after Dakar, Paris and Manchester, its next Métiers d'art collection would be unveiled on December 3 in China, in Hangzhou, located 200 kilometers south of Shanghai. She reveals these days that the show will be held “on the legendary West Lake”, in the historic center of the city.
Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2011, with its large dimensions (it is 15 km in circumference and 3 km in diameter) and its natural setting, it has inspired many poets and painters with its fascinating beauty.
In fact, this legendary place appears on the large 19th century Coromandel lacquer screen located in the office of Gabrielle Chanel's apartment at 31, rue Cambon, in Paris, as the brand recalls in a press release, specifying that 'as a “source of dreams and creativity, this screen nourished the imagination of the seamstress”.
To communicate about the event, Chanel summoned German director Wim Wenders and Tilda Swinton, brand ambassador. In a short film, the filmmaker follows the British actress from Gabrielle Chanel's office on rue Cambon, where she marvels at the ancient and precious Chinese screen to the famous lake in China. “An invitation to travel, both real and dreamed, to be discovered in its entirety on November 30, 2024,” indicates the brand.
Beyond storytelling, the choice of China seems dictated by commercial reasons. Luxury brands are multiplying events in this market, which remains crucial despite the slowdown it is experiencing for luxury goods since the Covid crisis. Hangzhou represents one of the ten most important cities for luxury, after Beijing and Shanghai.
