Around a table in Caveau 30 on the Cours FĂ©lix Faure, around fifteen Italian MAPIC delegates were dining quietly, when an unfortunate gesture turned everything upside down.
A waiter showed up to fill the tank of the ethanol heating lamp. But in a sudden movement (from a guest?), the lamp overturned before the protective tube was put back, a witness told us.
Five people were affected.
A 35-year-old woman and two men aged 30 and 56 were seriously burned, all three evacuated to the Toulon hospital center. The woman by helicopter, the two men by road.
The other two, two men aged 54 and 56, more slightly injured, were evacuated by firefighters to Cannes hospital.
The restaurant terrace was obviously evacuated and a security perimeter was established by municipal and national police officers while central commissioner Christophe Haget visited the site.
An administrative investigation will undoubtedly have to establish whether or not there have been breaches of safety rules.
This accident in any case raises the question of the use of this type of lamp, common on terrace tables, where all traditional heating is prohibited.
