The year 2024 has just exceeded a new weather record: unheard of since records began

Meteorological measurements indicate that the year 2024 set a record rainfall, even surpassing the data from the year 2001.

The year 2024 was marked by record rainfall in Belgium, thus establishing a new weather record since records began in Uccle. In fact, 1091.6 mm of rain had already been recorded as of November 27, surpassing the 2001 record. Which makes 2024 a record year.

Data from the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) indicates that there were 190 rainy days in 2024, matching the normal. So it rained a lot, but not more often. This precipitation was concentrated at certain times of the year, notably in January, February, as well as during the summer when considerable amounts of rain were recorded. More than 20 mm of precipitation in 24 hours at these times, which allows us to speak of “heavy rain”. This summer, we reached 40 mm in 24 hours. Data that experts link to global warming.

According to climatologist Pascal Mormal, “a warmer atmosphere can hold more water vapor. And when it reaches saturation, it can bring heavier precipitation.“, he explains. “More and more often, we have very rainy periods which are long-lasting and which are followed by dry periods which will also last for a long time. This is a marker of global warming,” explains the expert.
