The outbreak of Covid-19 and the disruption in the supply of medicines and other health products have had negative effects in the pharmaceutical industry. This is why the government of Senegal has decided to implement a recovery plan for the pharmaceutical industry in order to secure the supply chain and ensure the sovereignty of the sector. To achieve this, a recovery plan was implemented in September 2021 by the Ministry of Health and Social Action and the Operational Coordination and Monitoring Office (BOCS) in conjunction with all relevant stakeholders.

Thus, different initiatives began to be implemented such as reforms and public or private projects.

However, since the implementation of the recovery plan and the creation of the DU management unit, the project has struggled to take off, due to lack of inclusion in the budgetary programming of the Ministry of Health and Social Action.

A meeting is initiated by the Ministry of Health and Social Action in order to finalize the process started several years ago. “This is part of the revival of the local pharmaceutical industry. This will allow us to provide the health system with quality medicines and also promote the emergence of energies at the local level and boost production at the local level. local There was work that was done and which made it possible to set up a project management unit which was to catalyze thoughts and energies, allow all sectors to come together, allow the energy to be there. , THE tax, industry, health, in any case all the ideas can be put together to be able to give chance to this revival of the pharmaceutical industry”, explains Serigne Mbaye, chief of staff of the Minister of Health.

With the support of partners, there have been achievements, the government was able to carry out reforms, the pharmacy law which dated from the 1950s was updated in 2023, the implementing decrees were taken, a decree was issued. been taken to set up a correlation system.
