The New Popular Front nears the breaking point

Baptized the day after the dissolution of June 9, the young New Popular Front (NFP) struggles to hide the cracks that deepen its walls every day. In recent weeks, socialists and “rebels” have increased the opportunities to tear each other apart, under the helpless gaze of environmentalists. While the fall of Michel Barnier's government becomes more and more plausible, positions on the “day after” seem irreconcilable.

The socialists are not waiting “not much” of their meeting with the Prime Minister, Wednesday November 27 in the morning. In the event of recourse, by Michel Barnier, to article 49.3 of the Constitution, which allows a text to be adopted without a vote, they will vote as one man – the former President of the Republic and socialist deputy for Corrèze François Hollande included – for a motion of censure, which could, with the votes of the National Rally, obtain a majority in the National Assembly.

For the Socialist Party (PS), there is no question of returning to the summer scenario by pushing to Emmanuel Macron the candidacy of the enarch Lucie Castets to lead an NFP government. Sunday November 24, on Inter, the president of the PS group in the Assembly, Boris Vallaud, threw a wrench in the pond by wishing “raise the question of non-censorship”. A way of reaching out to the Macronists, while the left is missing a hundred votes to be in the majority.

“The PS is in the process of organizing a new “common base” with others in place of the New Popular Front. Vallaud, Faure, Bouamrane extend their hand to them”, said the leader of La France insoumise (LFI), Jean-Luc Mélenchon, on Karim Bouamrane. “Vallaud proposes to start not from the NFP, but from the Republican front. But the Republican front is not a political program. It will be without us! »decides the LFI deputy for Val-d'Oise Aurélien Taché, who recognizes that the rag is burning between “rebels” and socialists. “We rarely talk to each other, much less » than at the time of the New Ecological and Social People's Union (Nupes, the ancestor of the NFP between 2022 and 2024).

“Unnecessary provocation”

While pushing, without believing in it, the Lucie Castets option, the “rebellious” wish instead to obtain a “early presidential”. “Barnier will fall, crises will follow one another, what else can resolve the situation? »asks Aurélien Taché. An attitude that makes socialists, who want to govern, bristle. The socialist deputy from Paris Emmanuel Grégoire thus accuses his partners of “refuse power and the responsibilities that go with it”. “They are failing in their duties towards the voters”he criticizes.
