The singer of the duo Sonny and Cher published the first part of her memoir on November 19. In these pages, she notably recounts her love story with Sonny Bono, her first ex-husband.
Since their release on November 19, Cher's memoir continues to deliver its revelations. Some are crisp and funny, like this anecdote where the singer says she found herself in the middle of an orgy at Salvador Dalí's house. Others are more tender, like that of his meeting with Jackie Kennedy. This one is rather tragic.
The secretary's cliché
The scene takes place in 1967, Cher is 21 years old. The duo she formed with her partner at the time, Sonny Bono, had enjoyed immense success two years earlier, but their career was beginning to falter. While Sonny is in the middle of writing the film Chastityof which Cher is the heroine, the latter has just suffered her third miscarriage. Despite her distress, she supports her partner and hires a secretary to help her write her project by taking dictation. “A woman who happened to be young and blonde. That old refrain,” writes Cher.
One evening, she goes down to drink water and thinks she sees two silhouettes near the wrought iron door at the entrance. But as she returns to bed, the singer hears “rustling and whispering” and catches Sonny in the act. “At that moment I knew something was wrong, but I continued walking towards our bedroom, when I saw the silhouettes of Sonny helping his new assistant out the bedroom door. entrance, she writes. It was such a cliché. It broke my heart, but his effort must be applauded.”
Sonny, not “sexually satisfied”
It doesn't take much for young Cher to pack her bags and take refuge with her mother. Later, the latter tries to get his girlfriend back, but far from flatly apologizing to her, he places the blame on her. “I wouldn’t have had to look outside of our marriage if I had been sexually satisfied,” he allegedly told her. And even if Cher today describes her comments as “bullshit”, she admits to having allowed herself to be convinced. Even more so “when he was finished, I found myself apologizing.”
Cher and Bono finally became parents two years later to a son named Chaz. The same year, they were legally married before separating in 1972 and entering divorce proceedings two years later. In 1976, Cher had a second child, Elijah Blue Allman, with ex-husband Gregg Allman.
