Dakar, Nov 26 (APS) – Five French deputies filed on Tuesday a request for the establishment of a commission of inquiry responsible for shedding light on the massacre in Thiaroye, in the suburbs of Dakar, by the French army of African soldiers having fought under his orders during the Second World War, we learned from a media source.
These are parliamentarians from the left-wing opposition, mainly from La France insoumise (LFI) and a few deputies from the presidential camp, for example underlined the information site of Radio France Internationale (RFI).
This request submitted five days before the commemoration of the 80e anniversary of this episode in France’s colonial history in Africa must however be approved by the competent committee within the French parliament.
The proposed resolution aimed at setting up such a commission symbolically bears the name of Ousmane Sembène, a figure in Senegalese cinema and literature and former Tirailleur.
Dozens of African soldiers who fought for France during the Second World War died in the Thiaroye massacre which occurred on 1is December 1944.
They were killed after demanding payment in the same way as the native French of their dues.
