The number of job seekers is increasing in

The latest report from the International Labor Office (ILO) indicates an increase in the number of unemployed in France in the third quarter of 2024. According to the ILO, the increase in unemployment amounts to 35,000 more unemployed people compared to the second quarter. .

2,3 millions

this is the number of unemployed people in 2024 in France.

Young people are most affected by unemployment in 2024

The unemployment rate of young people from 15 to 24 years old is the highest in France. It reaches 17.2% on average in 2023. Workers aged 25 to 49 are just behind with around 6.7% unemployed. Senior profiles aged 50 and over are the least affected with a rate of 5.1% on average.

There is no need to panic, however, because young people are often in school before the age of 25, which would explain this high rate. Compared to the total population, the share of unemployed among young people amounts to 7.3%.

Men and women equally faced with unemployment

If the gap between the salaries of men and women remains, both sexes are equal regarding the unemployment. Indeed, unemployment among men stands at 7.5% compared to 7.2% for women.

Likewise, these are the people less qualified who are most exposed to unemployment. It reaches 13.3% among workers with at most a college diploma.

The duration of unemployment lasts less than a year on average

Each situation being different, not all job seekers spend a year unemployed. This may last longer or shorter. The INSEE report notes that 75% of unemployed people have been unemployed for less than a year and 59% for less than six months.

On the other hand, a quarter of job seekers have been there for more than a year. We then speak of “long-term unemployment”.
