Hammer and screwdriver in hand, Ela, Louis, and Aboubakar work in unison. Today's objective is special. Above all, they have no room for error otherwise no one will be able to sit or even lie down on the bench they are building. This Monday, November 25, 2024, these young out-of-schoolers aged 18 to 19 are participating in a workshop organized by the EDI Repères association and the Maison Départementale des Solidarités de Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois as part of the International Day of fight against violence against women.

A blood-red bench, symbol of the fight against femicide

“Every year, we organize events against violence against women. This year, we wanted to do something new and above all striking. We therefore got in touch with EDI Repères and we decided together to build this bench to fight against feminicides, but also family violence,” explains Manon Foissac, social worker at the Maison Départementale des Solidarités in Sainte-Geneviève-des. -Drink.

Symbol of the fight against femicide, this bench will be painted blood red during a second workshop which will take place this Tuesday, November 26, 2024. Without forgetting that a plaque will also be affixed to the latter which will notably be inscribed the call number of the national platform for listening to victims of domestic, sexist and sexual violence, reachable without interruption 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, namely 3919. Once finished, the bench will be installed in front of the Departmental House of Solidarity of Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois and will be inaugurated this Friday, November 29, 2024.

“Before today's assembly stage, the young people participated in six ateliers upstream where they made sketches and thought about how they were going to build this bench,” explains Laurent Baudet, trainer within the EDI Repères association, based in Brétigny-sur-Orge, which welcomes young people who have dropped out of school aged 16 aged 25 and people receiving RSA in order to help them reintegrate.

A self-defense workshop

« It touches me to participate in this project. I know people who have been victims of domestic violence. By building this bench, I tell myself that I am helping them a little in my own way. It also helps me discover other things. For example, I had never used a screwdriver, and now I do well,” says Ela, 19 years old.

In addition to the creation of this red bench, the House of Solidarity offers a self-defense workshop for womenthis Friday November 29, 2024. To participate, you must first register by email ([email protected]). It is advisable to come in sports clothing and with a fitness mat.
