An act of vandalism and a wave of indignation. Last weekend, a fresco in tribute to Ahmed Merabet, police officer killed by the Kouachi brothers during the attacks against Charlie Hebdo in 2015, has been degraded in Paris. The work is located not far from the former editorial offices, on Boulevard Richard-Lenoir, in the 11th arrondissement. The latter had already suffered acts of vandalism before.

“I am Gaza”

Sunday November 24, 2024, the artist C215, author of the fresco, relayed on X a photo where we see the name of the police officer crossed out with a blue line. Instead of “I am Ahmed”, “I am Gaza” was sprayed with white paint. The artist indicated in his publication that he would return Wednesday evening to restore the work.

“To attack his memory is to insult the Republic”

The facts aroused the indignation of several police unions. “Sickening. The authors of this filth are the bourgeois counterpart of the terrorists who murdered our colleague and friend” published Linda Kebbabnational secretary of the Un1té police union. “To attack his memory is to insult the Republic and those who defend it,” responded Fabien Vanhemelryck of the Alliance union.

The fresco already vandalized

These damages to this tribute made at the place where the police officer was shot are not new. In 2020, an inscription “You are the terrorists” covered the work stenciled on an electrical box. Same thing the following year, where the word “bicot” was tagged. Every time, Christian Guémyalias C215, had to restore the fresco.
