Since this Saturday, November 23, the Claude Debussy museum in Saint-Germain-en-Laye (Yvelines) is once again accessible to the public. It was able to benefit from renovation work which lasted three years.
The Claude Debussy museum in Saint-Germain-en-Laye (Yvelines) reopened its doors on Saturday November 23 after a major transformation. Located in the birthplace of the famous composer, in the heart of rue au Pain, this building, classified as a historic monument, has benefited from three years of renovation for a total cost of 5.8 million euros, indicates 78 Actu.
Three priorities
This work, financed by the municipality with regional and departmental support, had three priorities: bringing the building up to standard, particularly for accessibility, improving energy efficiency and completely overhauling the museum route.
The museum now extends over two exhibition floors. The ground floor, previously occupied by the tourist office, takes on the atmosphere of a 19th century shop, a time when the famous composer's parents ran an earthenware factory. The upper floor hosts the music room, the artist's birthplace in 1862, enriched with multimedia elements for interactive immersion.
“A central element of the heritage of Saint-Germain”
The exhibition also focuses on the more intimate aspects of Claude Debussy's life. Personal items, documents and photos reveal his financial challenges, his complex relationships and his bond with his daughter, Claude-Emma, note The Echoes. The third floor becomes a documentation center for researchers, while the top houses a graphic arts office.
“Debussy’s birthplace is a central element of Saint-Germain’s heritage. We wanted its renovation to highlight the only museum dedicated in France to the most famous French composer in the world,” declared Benoît Battistelli, deputy mayor of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, to the economic daily.
