The wind during the night from Sunday to Monday shook the trees of the Dordogne, and many leaves fell, particularly on the train rails. The SNCF announced this Monday afternoon that there is delays on the line between Périgueux and Limoges, particularly around Négrondes because of the excessive presence of dead leaves on the paths used by rail traffic.
More complicated braking
In fact, trains are forced to slow down when approaching this sector, because these leaves have two consequences. The first is when the wheels pass over the rails, they disintegrate to form a thin film on the rail, which makes braking more difficult due to the lack of grip. The wheels could lock up, which would extend the distance to being completely stopped.
The second difficulty is the difficulty in accelerating. With this film, the wheels are slipping and slip, which makes speed management more complicated. So, train drivers are forced to adapt by reducing the speed of their vehicles, which has the consequence of causing these delays.
