Since the start of the year, 122 women have lost their lives at the hands of their spouses or ex-spouses, a figure which illustrates the extent of this scourge.
According to data from the feminist collective for counting Femicides in France, the situation remains alarming, despite the measures put in place by the government. In 2024, 122 feminicides were recorded, confirming the urgency of strengthening prevention and protection systems for victims.
The Secretary of State for Equality between Women and Men, Salima Saa, declared on Franceinfo that the executive was fully mobilized on this issue, stressing that President Emmanuel Macron had made it a “great national cause” .
Furthermore, among the initiatives announced, the government plans to extend the system allowing women victims of sexual violence to file complaints directly in hospitals with emergency or gynecological services. This measure aims to facilitate access to justice for victims by providing them with a secure and confidential environment, says Saa.
In addition, particular attention will be paid to raising awareness and preventing chemical submission, a worrying phenomenon in the context of sexual violence highlighted with the case of Gisele Pelicat, drugged by her husband to be raped by different individuals. The government intends to strengthen information and prevention campaigns on this subject.
Finally, universal emergency aid intended for women victims of violence will be increased, from 13 to 20 million euros. This increase aims to offer immediate financial support to victims, thus facilitating their shelter and support towards personal reconstruction.
The International Day Against Violence Against Women, established by the UN in 1999, reminds us that the fight against violence against women remains a constant battle. Despite legislative progress, reality shows that much remains to be done with 122 feminicides recorded until November 20, 2024.
