French President Emmanuel Macron will participate, on December 1, 2024, in a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the massacre of Senegalese riflemen. This historic event will be held in Dakar, at the invitation of his Senegalese counterpart, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
This commemoration will pay tribute to the African soldiers who were victims of the tragic events of December 1, 1944. These riflemen, after having fought under the French flag during the Second World War, were targeted following demands linked to their rights.
The announcement of President Macron’s arrival was made by the Senegalese head of state during a speech delivered last Thursday, on the occasion of the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the landing in Provence. This will be Emmanuel Macron’s first official visit to Senegal since the election of Bassirou Diomaye Faye as president in April 2024.
The French president’s participation in this commemoration is part of an effort of recognition and remembrance, at a time when Franco-Senegalese relations are strengthening. Several media, including The Digital Sunconfirmed this major diplomatic meeting.
