mobilizes for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Still in the three departments of where women are the most victims of domestic violence, Island is mobilizing its forces on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

With the statistic of 14.6 female victims per 1,000 inhabitants, Reunion still occupies a sad second place in 2023 in the ranking of French departments experiencing the most domestic violence. And with four femicides recorded in 2024 in the department, the trend is hardly reassuring.

Also, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women this Monday, November 25, state services, national education, communities, associative fabric and media are once again mobilized to raise awareness of population to this scourge and undertake a change in mentalities.

  • From 7:20 a.m. this Monday morning on Meeting The 1stit is the singer and music therapist Gwendoline Absalon who will be Philippe Dornier's guest to discuss his new video “VioLet', which tells the story of a battered woman.
  • At 9:30 a.m., at the Hôtel de Région, a conference will be held on violence against women with the intervention of specialists: psychiatrist, psychologist, police officer, historian and geographer. The victims will also be given the floor.
  • At 10 a.m. at the prefecture, in conjunction with the regional directorate for women's rights and equality, prefect Patrice Latron will present to the media territorial governance and actions to prevent and combat violence against women.
  • In addition to the rectorate which will host an Equality Café and debate meetings on Tuesday November 26 and Thursday November 28 at 1:30 p.m., around twenty middle and high schools on the island will carry out awareness and prevention actions throughout the week. . Exhibitions, documentary screenings or association interventions. Some students will wear the orange ribbon or an orange or purple dress code depending on the establishment.
  • Other actions will be carried out in several municipalities on the island throughout the week.

A day which is also an opportunity to highlight the work of associations which work to support women victims of violence and the various initiatives to raise awareness, such as the “Emergency Issue” project. A manga and an exhibition aimed at young people aged 15 to 25 initiated by the screenwriter Marion Mansuy and the designer T, which will soon tour secondary schools.
