A delegation of banana growers was received this Saturday, November 23 at the town hall of Capesterre-Belle-Eau to discuss the difficulties of the sector. The significant reduction in the envelope allocated to POSEI, a program which supports agriculture in the outermost regions of the European Union, could have a major impact on players in the sector in Guadeloupe.
The banana planters of Guadeloupe are worried. The reduction of 2 million euros in the envelope allocated to POSEI, a European program to aid agricultural production in the outermost regions, is of course at the heart of the sector's concerns. This is why a delegation was received on Saturday November 23, 2024 in Capesterre-Belle-Eau by Mayor Jean-Philippe Courtois and elected officials of the municipality.
Other issues addressed include Sigatoka and the establishment of young farmers. Elected officials took stock of the challenges for the sector and gave their full support to farmers. A new meeting has also been scheduled for next Friday on these issues in order to continue discussions in the presence of parliamentarians and presidents of the communities concerned.
The objective of this meeting will be to discuss concrete solutions and possible actions to support the banana sector and respond to the economic and social challenges faced by planters.

Already in 2023, banana growers had warned of their difficulties due to the non-revaluation of the aid provided under the POSEI program.
