The result is clear. This Sunday, Valais residents rejected the cantonal climate law by nearly 56%. The slap is monumental for the supporters, as the match was so unbalanced on paper. Accepted by 75% of parliament in December 2023, the text was defended by all parties, from the left to the PLR, by the majority of the canton’s umbrella organizations and nature defense organizations. By convincing the majority of the population, after launching the referendum, the UDC therefore offers itself a prestigious victory a few months before the cantonal elections – a victory that it shares with Le Center du Haut-Valais, the Valais Union Arts and Crafts and the Union of Independents. And which is part of an underlying trend in Valais: the conservative right is on the rise.
“For two years, the UDC has always been in the winning camp,” remarks Philippe Cina, co-president of the Vert·e·s Valais. And this whether during elections or votes. Having become the second political force in the canton, ahead of the left, during the 2023 federal elections, it was the big winner in the municipal elections this fall, while in the spring it successfully opposed the draft new cantonal Constitution. .
