Marc Bloch, historian and recognized resistance fighter, will soon enter the Pantheon, Emmanuel Macron announced this Saturday. Assassinated in 1944, he is known for his commitment to the resistance.

Born in 1886 in Lyon (Rhône), Marc Bloch taught Middle Ages history at the University of Strasbourg from 1919 to 1936.
During this period, he created with Lucien Febvre the journal “Annals of Economic and Social History”. It is one of his greatest works, considered today as a spearhead of the French historiographical school. It has long been considered the most prestigious history journal, and has influenced many historians around the world.
Fervent resistance
Mobilized during the First World War as a Captain and Croix de Guerre, he was mobilized again in 1939. Shortly after, he wrote “The Strange Defeat”, a testimony and essay on the French defeat at the hands of the the German offensive in May-June 1940. Four years later, he joined the Resistance, of which he became one of the leaders for the Lyon region.
For his actions in the Resistance, Marc Bloch was arrested on March 8, 1944 in Lyon. Imprisoned and tortured in Montluc prison, he was shot on June 16.
“For his work, his teaching and his courage, we decide that Marc Bloch will enter the Pantheon,” declared the Head of State on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Strasbourg, on November 23, 1944.
