What happened this week in Aillon-le-Jeune (Savoie) in the Bauges? 17 children fell ill, as did adults who worked at the Mense farm. It all started on Tuesday November 19 when the first child, who had lunch in the canteen of the town's primary school, fell ill. Assuming food poisoning, the doctor he consulted notified the Regional Health Agency (ARS). The next day, of the 21 children who had eaten in the canteen, 17 fell ill. The fear of food poisoning has increased. “We contacted the Lescheraines canteen since it is the same company which supplies the two schools and no one had been contaminated”explains the mayor of Aillon-le-Jeune, Serge Tichkiewitch. “So we thought that the contamination could come from transport of food which is done hot between the central kitchen of the Mense farm and the school”continues the elected official. However, after verifications, the hypothesis is ruled out. “We had confirmation when we learned that people who had eaten at the Mense farm, and who were therefore without transport, were also contaminated”indicates Serge Tichkiewitch.
“Lightning Germ”
At this point, the mayor is leaning towards “a lightning germ” : “The people who serve at the Mense farm also serve in the canteen. One of them was able to transmit the virus to the children. So we are there now.” Knowing that the peak of the crisis has a priori passed : “The solution is calming down since on Thursday morning, there were only five children absent from school, and on Friday, there were only two. So the contamination, apparently, is ending and today we are at try to control what might have happened.”assures the elected official.
Other cases at the Auberge d’Aillon et d’Ailleurs
In addition to the children and the farm staff, we have another testimony which mentions several people fell ill while staying this week at the Auberge d’Aillon et d’Ailleurs. The mayor was not informed of this, but he links the proximity of the inn to the farm. “We are in the same town and there are people who work at the Mense farm and who may have family who work at the inn. People meet, go to the same stores. So we can actually have a transmission that took place at one time or another.”
Grand Chambéry analyzed the water
The hypothesis of water contamination was also on the table, but it seems unlikely for the elected official: “There are 446 inhabitants in Aillon-le-Jeune. Most consume the same water and have not been sick.” In any case, by chance, Grand Chambéry carried out a water analysis on Tuesday November 19. The results will be known soon, but the mayor, once worried, is no longer so. “When there is an epidemic like that from 13 to 17, we can wonder what is happening. And then we can have children who are a little fragile for whom it becomes dangerous. Now, the fact that it has actually calmed down reassures us, even if we would like to understand what could have happened.”
