My hedge is made up of several shrubs. There are oleanders among them and I know that it freezes at -7°C. How can you make them spend the winter outside in the open ground?

Beware of oleander frost

“In your message, you tell me that you have planted photinia, and other shrubs, notably oleanders,” remarks Bertrand rather circumspectly: “I don’t know which seller was the one who advised you to put them in your hedge, because Nerium oleander freezes at -5°c! »

Mulch, tie and veil

But Bertrand Souchon always has the solution, which comes in two stages.

First, you need to mulch at least 5 cm with miscanthus or flax straw. »

Then, when temperatures drop:

You will need two people, one to collect the branches towards the trunk and the second to tie them, before surrounding it with a winter cover.

Remove everything at the end of winter

On the other hand, at the end of winter, “as soon as the temperatures rise, everything will have to be removed, because the oleander is persistent, it must be able to photosynthesize thanks to the sun, otherwise it risks dying. »
