Paul Gutiez exhibits at Sylvie Beyler's Totem gallery, at Quatre – Routes, rue du 8 mai 45, in a place that we now call the Arrière-Cour, which includes the Ténébrarium, At the gates of Asia, Totem and Artshop Gallery.
Paul Gutiez lives in Branceilles, he was a CPE, a plastic arts teacher, but he says he is self-taught in painting. The paintings he presents are part of a series entitled “Gens d’ici”.
About the people here Paul Gutiez says: “People from below, small people and lowly people, these people are people from somewhere, from everywhere and elsewhere, they are people like you and me. “
The paintings represent scenes from everyday life, seen at the market, at the fair, people queuing in front of a stall, or in deep discussion. What is striking is the humanity that emerges from these “people from here” who we recognize by their postures and their clothing; we notice the painter's attention to detail. He says he works as close as possible to reality and does not allow himself any fantasy. It is a work executed in red chalk and sepia, the sensitivity of these beings jumps out at us to such an extent that we seem to recognize them. Paul Gutiez admits that he no longer paints much in favor of sculpting on wood and stone, but above all he devotes himself to writing and hopes to release a book soon. Having also photographed a lot, it could be that his numerous photos will replace his paintings, on the walls of the Totem gallery, in a few months.
