Essonne: Jorge F. sentenced to 16 years in prison for trying to kill his wife

The verdict fell this Thursday at the Évry-Courcouronnes judicial court. Jorge F., 54, was found guilty of “attempted murder of a spouse” and sentenced to 16 years of criminal imprisonment by the Essonne Assize Court. He faced life imprisonment. The man of Cape Verdean origin also received a permanent ban from French territory, and a withdrawal of parental authority. The accused has 10 days to appeal.

This is the end of a particularly trying trial for the victim, confronted by her ex-husband for the first time since the events. On the night of August 8 to 9, 2020, this woman in her fifties was stabbed three times in the family apartment located in Épinay-sous-Sénart.

That evening, Jorge F., very drunk, was once again violent. Already convicted of beating his wife who was pregnant with their son a few years earlier, he had tried to defenestrate the victim, who had resisted him. The fifty-year-old then grabbed a knife before chasing his wife into the home to stab her in the back, thigh and shoulder.

After three days in a coma, the victim survived his injuries, although he still had serious after-effects in his daily life. “That evening, I drink, I don’t know what’s happening anymore. I'm losing control (…) It's an accident,” the accused declared at the opening of the trial, referring to “an argument” because his wife did not answer his calls and came home “later than expected” of his work. Author and victim had shared approximately 10 years of life together.
