The construction site of this Gers castle built by XIIIe century has just passed a spectacular step. Which was filmed from every angle. This is the castle of Flamarens. Although the town has only around 140 inhabitants, it has one of the most beautiful castles in a department which has no shortage of them.
A troubled life
A building that has had a very eventful life. Built in 1466 by Jean de Grossolles on the bases of a castrum mentioned in 1289, this Gascon building was for a long time the property of the same family, who enlarged it during the 16th century.e century. But at the end of the 19th centurye century, the Grossolles sold it to the Galard-Magnas. Who didn't necessarily have the means to maintain it. As a result, he was left more or less abandoned. And as misfortune never comes alone, lightning came to aggravate the situation at the heart of the Second World War…
In 1963, the castle, badly damaged, changed hands. Listed as a Historic Monument two years later, it underwent a first partial restoration. But it was not until its takeover by Jacques Gadel in 1983 that a major plan was launched.
Lightning therefore irreversibly damaged the roof eight decades ago. But it is now ancient history thanks to the restoration carried out by the children of Jacques, Arthur and Marie-Hélène Gadel.
A few days ago, the castle tower found a brand new frame. A spectacular lifting operation therefore had to be carried out. It was filmed.
And photographed from every angle…
The end of the tunnel
This ambitious restoration project was selected as the site of the Gers department for the Heritage Lotto 2023 worn by Stéphane Bern with the support of the Ministry of Culture and FDJ (Française des Jeux). With the support also of the Drac, the Region and the Department.
Fundraising is still ongoing. The work is expected to be completed in 2025.
A specialist who worked on the restoration of Notre-Dame de Paris
We owe the feat of lifting the frame to Michel Gomis, from the specialized company Darts. A man who is not at his first exploit. He has in fact recently worked on a much more publicized project, that of the restoration of Notre-Dame de Paris.
