George Russell hits the jackpot in Las Vegas

Passing last under the checkered flag, George Russell won the day and is in a strong position at the start of tomorrow's Grand Prix after being the fastest throughout practice.

The British driver is back on pole position for the fourth time in his career and the third time this season after Montreal and Silverstone.

The Mercedes were the most competitive in the cool night of the Las Vegas Strip and it was Russell who took advantage the most by avoiding the repeated mistakes made by Lewis Hamilton.

A touch and then the pole

Already the fastest in EL3, George managed Q3 perfectly despite a little heat, flirting with the wall at turn 5 to take a nice pole position.

« It's amazing to be back on pole position,
he exclaimed into James Hintchcliffe's microphone. We were so fast this weekend, but I was able to find a little extra on the lap that really counts in Q3. I had some hot moments on my first attempt. I'm so happy. Had to dive in some places, but it was a nice surprise. »

Aim for victory tomorrow

“I made a small mistake on my first lap and I had to change my front wing, he continued. There was a moment when I thought I wasn't going to have time to do that last lap, but everything went well. We now have to dig deeper to understand why we were so fast this weekend.”

“I wanted to be the last to hit the track to benefit from the best griphe added. Sometimes you have to take risks.
I was confident that by putting in a clean lap I could at least secure the front row. We have had some good qualifying sessions recently, but we need to back them up with a good result while aiming for race victory. »
