Despite estimates and precautions, the heavy snowfall on Thursday, November 22, 2024 will have surprised a lot of people in Calvados.

Particularly in the sector of Virois bocage and Pré-Bocagewhere a white layer of several tens of centimeters sometimes quickly formed.

But it is also in moments like this that great solidarity initiatives. This is how the commune of Vire Normandie decided to open the Vaudeville hall to people who are immobilized and without housing solutions in town.

A firstin such circumstances, which 13 people were able to take advantage of to eat and spend the night in a warm place.

The village hall and the Aunay dojo open for stranded people

This emergency reception option was also offered to Aunay-sur-Odon (Les Monts d’Aunay), where the party room had also been specially opened for people stuck in the community.

The idea began to form when it was necessary to accommodate several schoolchildren, whose parents were still stuck on the way home, and who therefore could not come and pick them up. So we opened the party room to welcome everyone warmly, from the end of the afternoon. And realizing that several people would not be able to return home until the next day anyway, we chose to leave it open for the night, with the possibility for people to sleep in the dojo, just behind.

The community of solidarity with the shipwrecked

A beautiful solidarity chain is then also set up as a complement in the commune: the Hôtel de la Place – the local hotel – provides pillows and duvets for the night, the municipal agents will make purchases before the shops close so that everyone has something to eat and drink on site, Aunay Garage trailer vehicles blocked on the road, as well as farmers, including advisor Franck Hellouin, who are multiplying tractor races pour deposit at home the inhabitants who could not continue on the road…

“Some were ready to return on foot, despite the danger, others would have spent the night in their car… At least, like that, everyone was able to be brought back to safety or welcomed warm. There was really great solidarity, and very good work done by the municipal agents,” adds the councilor.

Who herself participated in round to ensure that no one was still in the vehicles stopped across the commune, and to redirect them towards the village hall.

Always an option, if necessary

And if the dozen people who benefited from this unusual welcome were able to leave this Friday morning, November 22 after a good breakfast, the village hall and the dojo will be able to again be reopened if necessaryduring the night from Friday to Saturday.

We adapt to demand, if there are needs. In any case, no one should sleep outside.
