A year after the death of Nahel, killed by a police officer after refusing to comply, on June 27, 2023, a march is organized in Nanterre this Saturday June 29 in the afternoon. The march will start at 2:00 p.m. from the Charles de Gaulle esplanade, a few hundred meters from the Pablo Picasso district, where the teenager lived. The procession will join Nelson Mandela Square, where Nahel died.
On RTL, Nahel’s mother indicated that this march will be “silent” and that she would make “a little speech”. She said she was “dead inside”: “I have nothing left. Why do I get up in the morning? It’s for no one. I don’t even have a reason to live anymore, I no longer have want to live.” Some 500 to 800 people are expectedaccording to a police source.
Nahel’s death had triggered several days of riots and had become a symbol of the fight against police violence. According to a ministry report, the riots had one billion euros of damageA reconstruction of the facts took place on May 5 in the presence of lawyers, the police officer who shot him, his colleague present that day and several witnesses.
