Why Euralis Gastronomie is selling off a site in Dordogne

Important clarification: the other Euralis Gastronomie sites, at Maubourguet (Hautes-Pyrénées) where there is a slaughterhouse and a cannery, and at Les Herbiers (85), would not be threatened.

The arrest of the Sarladaise unit sanctions a situation that is quite simple to summarize. “The rate of use of this industrial tool has fallen to 19% in 2024, despite numerous initiatives,” indicates Euralis which, in a press release, also mentions “a loss of 30 million in 6 years”. However, Euralis says it is “looking for a buyer” for this tool in which “€3 million has been invested since 2022”.

More generally, it is “a repositioning of the production of the “duck branch” which is taking shape here. A figure is edifying in this regard: “a succession of health crises has”, according to Euralis “resulted in a reduction”, to the tune of “more than 10 million ducks”, in annual production “compared to 2015”.

Lines are moving

Disturbed, as we know, by a very complicated situation on the agricultural markets as well, the Béarnaise cooperative does not wish to say more. For now. Its leaders should, however, speak at the next annual general meeting, “at the beginning of February 2025”.

In the meantime, we note that lines are moving regularly in the Euralis sphere. Let us recall, in particular, this merger announced at the start of the 2020 school year between a subsidiary and an operator based in Tarn-et-Garonne, Caussade Semences. The operation gave birth to Lidea (8 factories, 46,000 hectares in production; €350 million in turnover) with Euralis as majority shareholder. But the closure of the Caussade site was announced last October.

Furthermore, more recently, Lur Berri was entrusted with the collection and marketing of cattle “stamped” by Euralis until then. 2,300 breeders and more than 80,000 head are affected by the new situation.
