Two children from Guérande (Loire-Atlantique) won the prestigious title of Dual Pilgrim, the pilgrim's Grail. Despite their young age, they are 6 and 9 years old, Côme and Evode, have covered, in a few months, many kilometers on two famous trails: the Kumano Kodo in Japan and the Santiago de Compostella in Spain. Having traveled these two pilgrimage paths allows you to obtain the Dual Pilgrim. A rare reward for walkers so young. We tell you about this adventure experienced as a family.
Mount Fuji before Kumano Kodo
L'Echo de la peninsula met at the end of summer 2024 Evode, 9 years old, and his brother Côme, 6 years old. The two young residents of Guérande had climbed, with their parents, the 3776 m of the mythical Mount Fuji in Japan and walked 45 km on the famous pilgrims' trail, the Kumano Kodo.
A three-week family road trip that also took them to visit several major Japanese cities, always on foot.
Enough to arouse the admiration of the parents, Matthieu and Julie Menant, for their two little boys who did not give up during the journey to the land of the rising Sun.
“We walked together, we helped each other when things were slow, we talked, admired and discovered nature. It was a great family adventure,” Julie told us at the time.
115 km on the Santiago de Compostela
This first experience made them want to wear hiking shoes again, to tackle the Camino de Santiago, the famous Santiago De Compostella.
For 5 days, during the holidays in October 2024, the Menant family walked from Sarria to Santiago, through meadows, villages, forests and cities. In total 115 km in the small (but muscular) legs of Evode and Côme.
They take down the pilgrim's Grail
Another great achievement recognized by the obtaining of the Dual Pilgrim, the pilgrim's Grail since it is awarded to people who have traveled the two pilgrimage routes, the Kumano Kodo and the Routes of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. At only 6 and 9 years old, the young Guérandais have checked both boxes. Which shouldn't be so common.
And already, another challenge is emerging for globetrotters next summer. A tour, on foot, of the famous Scottish lake Loch Ness, approximately 130 km!
