It’s a profession that is slowly dying. Being a childminder is no longer fashionable in 2024. Since 2013, the number of childminders has been in continuous decline in France. An observation that is also made at the departmental level. So, to combat this phenomenon, the Moselle department, CAF 57 and the local Relais Petite Enfance organized events and meetings throughout the week to promote the profession. Example in Château-Salins.
“What if it was you tomorrow?” » This is the question addressed to visitors to the Château-Salins multipurpose room this Wednesday morning. A question of little significance given the low number of curious people, unfortunately. However, the entire early childhood sector was represented. Enough to draw up this observation together: the job of childminder is no longer attractive. “We are seeing a drop in approval files and training files. Previously, we had groups of around 10/12 people. Today, we are more around 6/8 people per session”notes Anne Fischer, continuing education advisor at GRETA Lorraine-Est.
Levers of attractiveness
Low pay, a difficult and undervalued job, insufficient prospects for advancement, 120 hours of training to complete… these are some of the reasons that can explain the decline of the profession. Today, 40% of childminders in the department are over 55 years old. In 2030, nearly 50% of the workforce will retire. When we look at Saulnois, “Seven years ago we had 250 childminders and today we only have 140. There is really difficulty in certain sectors for parents to find childcare”paints Amandine Ziccarelli, head of the social and family affairs center of the Saulnois community of communes. Please note that to promote the attractiveness of the childminder profession in this rural area, it is possible to be helped to travel. At the departmental level, Caf 57 even issues a bonus for those at the start of their activity who settle down.
