Sharp increase in obesity over the last thirty years in Switzerland

Obesity is becoming a worrying issue in the country. The proportion of overweight or obese people has been increasing for thirty years and now concerns 43% of the population. At least that is what emerges from the latest health survey carried out by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), published this Thursday. Carried out every five years, this analysis listing the figures for 2022 makes it possible to assess changes in the health of the population.

The weight prism is important in order to implement targeted public health programs. This is all the more useful since obesity, a complex chronic disease, is among the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. An increase in the number of obese or overweight people in the population is increasing also the appearance of other chronic conditions, such as hypertension, cholesterol, sleep disorders, certain types of cancer and respiratory diseases, as well as the musculoskeletal system.
