Children’s Parliament: focus on public policies relating to children

Rabat – Public policies relating to childhood were on the menu of the national session of the Children’s Parliament, which was held Wednesday in the House of Representatives, as part of the 2023-2025 legislature.

Chaired by the President of the House, Rachid Talbi Alami, this session, which aims to promote citizenship education for parliamentary children, was an opportunity to interact with different ministers, to promote the experiences of these children in matter of public debate and to inquire about sectoral policies, in particular those affecting this fringe, pillar of society and locomotive of the future.

Speaking on this occasion, the President of the House of Representatives indicated that the Children’s Parliament constitutes a Moroccan creation distinguished by its organization, its philosophy and its noble objectives, as well as a school and a framework for training in democracy. , dialogue, institutional debate and citizen participation.

This is not only about simulating the national parliament, but also about providing a framework for drawing attention to and discussing issues central to children’s lives and interests among those affected, to whom the public policies and national legislation are dedicated, he stressed.

Mr. Talbi Alami noted, moreover, that “this session, which is being held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, celebrates the 25th anniversary of the launch of this Parliament, in a year when the Moroccan people also commemorate the 25th anniversary of the accession of the Sovereign to the Throne of His Glorious Ancestors”, noting that the issues of childhood and the preservation of children’s rights, particularly in matters of legislation and provision of social and cultural services, were at the heart of the achievements and reforms carried out by Morocco during this period.

These achievements embody the particular interest that His Majesty the King places in human development, social inclusion and childhood, he explained, welcoming the work carried out by the Children’s Parliament since its launch in 1999 under the effective presidency of HRH Princess Lalla Meryem, president of the National Observatory of Children’s Rights (ONDE).

The questions from the parliamentary children, who represent the different regions of the Kingdom, focused mainly on the reform of the national education sector, the protection of students in schools, the mental health of children, as well as youth entrepreneurship, in addition to the integration of people with disabilities, youth culture and child protection policy.

In response to questions from parliamentary children, the ministers concerned provided detailed answers on the government’s efforts to reform the quality of education, particularly through pioneer schools and digitalization, capable of promoting school and improvement of learning.

With regard to health, it was underlined that Morocco has made significant progress in this area, through strategies aimed at improving the psychological and physical health of children in educational settings and strengthening the provision of health care. health, among others.

In a statement to MAP, child parliamentarian from the Marrakech-Safi region, Mouhtadi Chakroun, indicated that ONDE and the Children’s Parliament made training available to child parliamentarians for a week, with the opportunity to meet and get to know veterans of the Children’s Parliament and benefit from their experiences, as well as complete support throughout the training provided aimed at promoting the values ​​of citizenship and solidarity.

For his part, Abir Bougataya, representative of the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, indicated in a similar statement that this national session will allow them to carry the voice of Moroccan children, particularly within parliament, as well as to ask questions on the government’s priorities for children.

Note that Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Meryem, president of the National Observatory for Children’s Rights (ONDE), chaired, Tuesday at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University of Rabat, the ceremony celebrating the 25th anniversary of Parliament of the child.
