This Thursday, November 21, Météo-France placed Haut-Rhin on orange alert for a risk of snow and ice. 10 to 20 cm of snow could fall, particularly south of Mulhouse, in Sundgau.
This meteorological episode, caused by the passage of the storm Caetano, could make traffic conditions delicate, even difficult, at the end of the day in the south of the region, recalls the prefecture.
Motorists will need to exercise extra caution. The Inforoute Alsace site classifies several sectors of the Vosges in the “delicate traffic” category this Thursday, particularly around the Champ du Feu massif or in the Hautes-Vosges Secondary networks could also be affected. The most dangerous phenomena should cross the Haut-Rhin in the evening, particularly the south of the department, specifies the prefecture.
Bas-Rhin is on yellow alert from 11 a.m. 3 to 5 cm of snow are expected, mainly between Sélestat and Strasbourg, depending on the prefecture. She also recommends caution to road users and advises them to anticipate their trips.
According to forecasters from Atmo-Risk and Meteo Suivi Alsace, the episode should end in the south of Bas-Rhin in the middle of the evening. Snowfall could continue in Haut-Rhin overnight before evacuating through Switzerland by Friday.
Wednesday November 20, the snow had already fallen on the Vosges reliefs from 600 meters above sea level. The layer had locally reached 10 centimeters thick on the summits.
The European Community of Alsace details some practical advice in the event of bad winter weather: fill the windshield washer fluid tank with an antifreeze product, check the tire pressure, the proper functioning of the battery and ignition systems, power supply, defrosting and heating.
In snowy weather, you should equip yourself with chains, special tires or snow socks. The chains match the tire size and must be installed on the drive wheels. Practicing the installation of these devices is strongly recommended. Winter equipment is mandatory from November 1 to March 31 to travel on the roads of mountain communities (all information is available here). On the road, slow down, respect safety distances and respect the priority of snow removal and salting machines.
Patches of ice: often present in shaded and humid areas, a specific sign sometimes indicates these risk areas. The effectiveness of winter tires on ice should not be overestimated.
