CAN 2025: Mali and Senegal, standard bearers of the sub-region

Senegal will participate in the 2025 African Cup of Nations in Morocco (December 21, 2025-January 18, 2026) with only one immediate neighbor, Mali, unlike the last edition of the competition organized in 2023 in Ivory Coast. , in which Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Mauritania took part.

Of all Senegal’s immediate neighbors, only Mali escaped elimination. The Eagles took first place in Group I with 14 points.

Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Mauritania, respectively third in groups A, C, H and I, did not secure their place at the 2025 Moroccan CAN.

These nations took part in the A tournament of the 2023 edition organized and won by Côte d’Ivoire.

Seventeen nations out of the 24 participated in the last CAN 2023

Senegal and sixteen other countries will participate in their second CAN in a row.

The great football nations: South Africa (12th participation), Algeria (21st participation), Burkina Faso (14th participation), Cameroon (21st participation), Ivory Coast (26th participation), Egypt (27th participation), Mali (14th participation), Morocco (19the participation), Nigeria (20th participation), DR Congo (21st participation), Senegal (18th participation), Tunisia (22nd participation), Zambia (19th participation) will be present at the Moroccan CAN.

Equatorial Guinea (5th participation, Tanzania (4the participation) and Mozambique (6e participation) are also expected at CAN 2025, after that of 2023.

The Egyptians (14 points), the Senegalese (16 points), the Cameroonians (14 points), the South Africans (14 points), the Malians (14 points), the Algerians (16 points), the Comorians (12 points) , the Angolans (14 points) and the Moroccans (18 points) remained invincible during the CAN 2025 qualifiers.

Seven countries return

The Comoros, absent from the last edition of the CAN, after their first participation in 2021 in Cameroon, are making their return. The Coelacanthes distinguished themselves in these qualifiers by finishing first in group A ahead of Tunisia, second. They recorded 12 points.

After its first participation in 2012, Botswana is also making its return. Gabon (9e participation), Benin (6e participation), Uganda (8e participation), Sudan (10e participation), Zimbabwe (6e participation), also return to the competition.

Ghana, largely absent from the 2025 edition

The Ghana national team, 24 participations in the CAN and four-time winner of the competition (1963, 1965, 1978, 1982), will not participate in the continental competition. The Black Stars finished last in Group F with just three points. Ghana finished the qualifiers with three draws and three defeats.
