24 tonnes of used tires destined for Senegal seized

A waste export network hidden under dubious official declarations has been dismantled in Livorno, a port in Tuscany, Italy. A joint operation by the carabinieri of the Grosseto ecological unit and local customs launched on November 19, made it possible to get their hands on a load of twenty-four (24) tons of used tires, ready to head to Senegal. .

According to L’Observateur, these tires, piled up and compressed in an anarchic manner, bore the marks of careless storage, bent to the point of harming their structure.
“They were unusable and posed a threat to road safety,” said an official of the operation and reported by the newspaper.

Who informs that Italian agents, supported by counterparts from the Darsena ports, have uncovered a real waste export network. “The load included 2,142 used tires,” the military said. Who added: “Although they have been classified as special waste since certification in 2003, storage and export directives have not been respected.”

The exporter, informed the same source, is an Italian entrepreneur active in the field of plastics recycling, is now targeted by multiple charges: illegal management and trafficking of waste, violation of articles 256 and 259 of the law consolidated on the environment….
