Complaints for sexual assault in Louvain: two fathers expelled from Keizerberg Abbey

Two fathers will be expelled from Keizersberg Abbey in Leuven on Thursday after complaints of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior dating back to 2022, Het Laatste Nieuws reported on Wednesday. The congregation of the Benedictine abbey confirms that “a certain number of preventive measures” have been taken.

Keizersberg Abbey in Leuven houses student rooms and is a meeting place for social projects. Until recently, four fathers still resided there, writes HLN. Two of them must leave the abbey tomorrow after a complaint for sexual assault and another for inappropriate behavior.

According to HLN, one complaint concerns a man who had been residing in the abbey for several months with the intention of becoming a priest himself. It was during his probationary period, the postulate, in the summer of 2022, that another priest allegedly attacked him on several occasions. The victim reported the facts to the superior of the abbey, the prior-administrator, according to HLN.

The second fact comes from a father who had resided in the abbey for a while. He would have filed a complaint against the superior, the former prior-administrator. It is not yet clear what the complaint is about.

Monastic life in the abbey is temporarily suspended “in the interest of the investigation”it was clarified. The congregation will not communicate further “while the investigation is ongoing”.
