Leather goods, food sector, increased presence of women… In Aude, the industry is attracting more job seekers

From November 18 to 24 throughout it is industry week. For 13 editions now, the system has highlighted the sector. In Aude, the results are intended to be conclusive from one year to the next according to data communicated by France Travail.

“At a certain time, many industrial companies went abroad. We are seeing the opposite effect today.” Jorge Sousa, service manager of the departmental directorates in Aude of France Travail attests to this observation. On the occasion of the 13e industry week, taking place between November 18 and 24, the future of the sector is the subject of heated discussions.

As a reminder, the event itself exists with the desire to highlight the different existing professions as well as the companies which recruit from job seekers. One of the other clearly stated objectives: to promote the industry by ignoring preconceived ideas but also and above all to promote accessibility to women.

In Aude, considerable progress has taken place according to Jorge Sousa: “This year, the theme was 'With industry, create your future'. Across the entire department, we observed an increase of 0.8% over one year, bringing the sector's salaried employment rate to 8% This is the most significant development compared to other activities. If we refer to the current situation which is less favorable elsewhere in France, the situation within the territory is going against the grain.

Progress has been constant since the end of the covid-19 pandemic

In detail, the food industry accounts for 24% of jobs in the industrial sector. “She clearly wears it but she's not the only one, specifies the head of departmental directorate services at France Travail. We observed a massive arrival of leather goods which helped to amplify first impressions. 520 declarations prior to employment in just 12 months were recorded on leather and shoes.” A number which represents 6% of the sector's employment rate. In alone, for example, there are around ten stores of this style.

More generally, between July 2023 and June 2024, 1,450 job offers were listed. In the lot, 70% of contract proposals are long-term (more than 6 months or a permanent contract). “Progression has been constant since the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, underlines Jorge Sousa. The whole country demonstrates a desire for reindustrialization. Consequently, the departments are concerned, starting with Aude.”

The evolution is also found in the profiles. More women are working in the sector: “They are much more represented (46%) compared to all other activities (37%).” On the other hand, there remains one area in which progress still needs to be made: young people. There are still too few (34%) who choose this path.
