A body was discovered this Sunday afternoon on a beach in Marck (Pas-de-Calais), confirms the public prosecutor of Boulogne, according to information from Voix du Nord. This body “very altered” could not be identified at this time. An investigation is opened to determine the causes of death, and “to see if it was a migrant, if it can be linked to a shipwreck”indicates the prosecutor.
71 people have died since the start of the year
The investigation was entrusted to police officers from the Calais police station. This Wednesday, a new lifeless body was discovered on a beach in Quend (Somme). According to the Pas-de-Calais prefecture, to date, “71 people have died since the start of the year during an attempted sea crossing” towards England*. This is the highest figure since 2018 and the beginning of the phenomenon of “small boats” to cross the Channel.
On October 23, the sinking of a migrant boat officially resulted in three deaths, but an uncertain number of missing people. The associations point out that not all shipwreck victims are systematically found.
*This figure also includes deaths of migrants beyond Pas-de-Calais, and a number of bodies found at sea or on beaches in recent weeks.
