Melilia authorities seek EU intervention

The local government of Melilia seems in a hurry to reopen commercial customs at a time when no date has yet been considered. According to the Iberian press, the president’s authorities urged the Spanish government on Monday to involve the European Union to demand the reopening of customs posts.

The first vice-president of the government of Melilia who also manages the portfolio of Economy, Commerce, Miguel Marín on behalf of the Popular Party, called on Morocco to respect “the traveler’s regime”, under the pretext that the Kingdom would have banned entry of goods since May 2022.

“If the Spanish government is a weak government and does not feel qualified to demand the reopening of customs and respect for the Travelers regime, it should ask Europe for help,” he said .

Customs has been the subject of heated debate in Spain for months. The customs posts at Sebta and Melilia have been closed since 2018. Rabat and Madrid agreed in the joint declaration signed during Pedro Sanchez’s visit in 2022 to reopen them according to a schedule set by mutual agreement. A few so-called pilot tests took place from January to February 2023. Since then, there has been no progress.
