An action against Mercosur carried out by farmers in the South Channel last night

Several farmers from the South Channel met this Tuesday, November 19, in the evening. These members of the Young Farmers (JA) and the Departmental Federation of Agricultural Operators' Unions (FDSEA), expressed their dissatisfaction with the potential Mercosur agreement between the European Union and South America. At nightfall, they went to several towns near Avranches. “We are going to cover the city exit signs. This is the first step in showing the mayors our disagreement. They will then report this to the prefecture,” explains Brice Rivage, member of the Young Farmers office.

In Saint-James, Pontorson, Pontaubault or Précey, “Mercosur” posters, crossed out with a red line, are stuck on municipal signs. “On Monday we did the same thing in Mortain, Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët and Isigny-le-Buat,” adds Nicolas Boulé, deputy secretary of the FDSEA. Other actions have already been carried out in the department, such as covering radars the previous week.

An agreement that worries breeders

All the farmers present are breeders. For them, the Mercosur agreement is a threat to their exploitation. “We will end up with beef that does not meet the European standards that we must follow,” recalls Brice Rivage.

This covering of panels could only be the first step in angering farmers, if they are not heard. “If we do not have answers from the State or the prefecture, actions will intensify,” warns Nicolas Boulé. Farmers expect the first results in the coming days.
