the essential
Social discontent is gaining ground: in Figeac after the farmers on Monday, it was the early childhood staff who demonstrated their anger in front of the sub-prefecture this Tuesday afternoon. Nearly forty people gathered to ask for more resources and an upgrading of the profession.
It was through soft songs that early childhood professionals expressed their anger on Tuesday afternoon, for two hours, in front of the Figeac sub-prefecture. Nearly forty people took part in this new national action led by the “No baby in the locker” collective. The third in three years. “We were already there in October 2022 and October 2023. These are the same demands as last year” recalls Carole Gimenez, director of the intercommunal crèche “Les Petits loups” in Figeac. According to her, the structures and childminders who look after toddlers suffer from a chronic lack of recognition. The future seems worrying for the entire profession in need of training and vocation. Concerns mainly relate to salaries and continuing training. “I'm not saying that we work at the crèche in poor working conditions but we have to have a global vision and it's important to be united, to be able to help each other. We fight to have qualified staff. And We sense a general fed-up everywhere,” denounces the Figeac leader.
Concerns about salaries and continuing education
Supported by a few parents, childcare workers, nurses, educators and even managers of local structures hope to obtain “more than just publicity effects this time”. “The big problem is the lack of promotion of early childhood professions and the difficulties in recruiting, summarizes Sandrine Bachoux, early childhood educator. In the sector, the teams are aging or a certain number of childminders will soon leave for retirement. Early childhood professions are no longer a dream. In reality, it is difficult to find qualified and experienced staff.
Like her, colleagues from all over Figeacois and even Aveyron are participating in this Figeacois event, the only one organized in the Lot. “We wanted to gather in Figeac because it’s complicated to go to Toulouse, given the low salaries we have” explains Carole Gimenez. Some come from Decazeville, most come from Grand Figeac, the Babilou crèche in Figeac, the public crèches of Figeac and Capdenac-Gare, the associative crèches of Labathude and Latronquière, the parental crèche of Cardaillac but also the Relais Petite Enfance (formerly RAM) of Lacapelle-Marival and Sousceyrac-en-Quercy.
Christiane Sercomanens, deputy mayor of Figeac and head of the Intercommunal Center for Social Actions, was present to provide support to the demonstrators. “We must give nurseries and the early childhood sector the means to operate, and offer greater recognition to these professions,” said the elected official, recalling that childcare is the primary concern for couples who wish to settle down. on the territory. “Without them, the territory cannot be attractive.”
