On Thursday, Brittany could be hit by snowfall, but uncertainty remains. With 48 hours to go, it is impossible to say with precision the extent and duration of the precipitation. What is certain is that a depression will circulate to the south of the region, potentially bringing its share of rain and snow.
The conditions are ideal for an infrequent weather event this season, report meteorologists specializing in the region. A confrontation between cold and mild air masses could shake up the Breton climate. While the coastline should remain relatively mild, part of the interior could find itself covered in snow. On this map Steven Tual differentiates between the territories which will be able to see flakes and those where the snow will potentially remain on the ground.
The first snowfall could begin in Finistère at the end of the night, Wednesday to Thursday, and should spread throughout the day. Going back towards the north of Brittany, precipitation could turn into snow. The Monts d'Arrée, then the Côtes d'Armor, Ille-et-Vilaine and the north of Morbihan risk experiencing bleaching soil.
But be careful, the situation is far from fixed. In the middle of the day, a mild spell could melt the snow and replace it with rain or mixed rain and snow in the most exposed Breton departments. However, at the end of the afternoon, the precipitation could switch back to snow, reviving the risk of slippery ground.
Concerning ground handling, uncertainty remains great. Côtes d'Armor and Ille-et-Vilaine seem to be the departments most likely to see snow accumulate, in particular thanks to their more favorable position in relation to the conflict of air masses. If the conditions are right, these departments could end up with truly bleached soil, but for how long?
On Thursday, the Bretons will have to closely monitor the evolution of the weather. Winter could set in early and unexpectedly. A meteorological phenomenon not to be underestimated.
