It is the first major French media to make this choice, following that of the Guardian in the United Kingdom and Vanguardia in Spain.
The Ouest-France X accounts will now be silent. The major regional media announced this Tuesday that it would stop feeding the American social network, owned by Elon Musk for two years. “This tool which could have been fabulous for democracy has become an area where the law is not applied”explains to Le Figaro Xavier-François Lefranc, president of the management board of Ouest-France. A vision contradictory to the philosophy of the Breton media, whose shareholder is the association for the support of the principles of humanist democracy.
Ouest-France journalists will be free to continue publishing their articles on their personal X accounts. But the media's official accounts will no longer relay anything. Ouest-France had already greatly slowed down its activity on the former Twitter since January. The official accounts were content to relay posts from its own journalists, with around twenty publications per week compared to 200 per day in 2023.
Ouest-France is the first major French media to make this decision. The British The Guardian and the Spanish La Vanguardia made the same choice last week.
