Last Saturday, a demonstration took place in Isigny-le-Buat, in Manche, against the project to expand tomato greenhouses over an area of 20 hectares. This project, carried out by an international company, has for the moment been stopped by the prefect due to insufficient compensation measures.
As the site indicates Actu.frthe Peasant Confederation and the “Stop Tomates” collective then organized this gathering to warn of the negative impacts of such an extension on local agriculture and the environment.
A worrying expansion
Even if the demonstration ended peacefully, tensions around the expansion of the greenhouses remain high. While some see this project as an opportunity for economic development, others fear that it will harm local and sustainable agriculture to favor large companies.
As for local elected officials, they once again indicated their firm opposition to this project in order to preserve a model that respects both local producers and the environment. They also underlined the importance of supporting greener and more inclusive agriculture and avoiding domination by agro-industry.
