The Morris column installed on the Allée Jean-Jaurès in Langon (Gironde) bothers opposition municipal councilor Didier Sendrès.

It is located 60 meters from the facade of No. 51 rue Maubec, listed as a historic monument by decree of October 16, 2000 for its facade (XVI^e and 17^e century) and its roofs.

On November 14, 2024, the elected official questioned the mayor of Langon, Jérôme Guillem, during the municipal council meeting of November 14.

Bell tower or column?

The deputy mayor for town planning, city project and works, Denis Jaunié, replies that it is not a “bell tower” but a “Morris column”.

Everyone knows the Morris columns which have been in the streets of Paris for 80 years.

“This column was installed for the promotion of cultural shows of the city, continues Denis Jaunié. Authorization would have had to be requested from Bâtiments de France. It is the company which normally makes the request, as for bus shelters. We will regularize this. We don't think it bothers us. »

28 advertising lollipops in Langon

Didier Sendrès returns to the work. “I identified 28 advertising lollipops in Langon,” he notes. This is not consistent with the display regulated by the Local tax on outdoor advertising (TLPE) and the initial desire to fight against visual pollution. »

Denis Jaunié specifies that “the lollipops of the city center pay for 19 bus shelters de Langon” and that the Morris column cost the city nothing since it was installed free of charge by the company.
