“This includes the implementation of initiatives aimed at encouraging independent reading, enriching the skills of after-school staff in promoting reading, and creating an environment conducive to reading within after-school settings.”
Concretely, supported by the national strategy “Reading and Territories” put in place by the Ministry of Culture with funding available from 2024 and partnerships established with the network of media libraries in Seine Normandy Agglomeration and associations, the city of Vernon wishes to implement this plan from the 2024-2025 school year.
Objectives stated by the municipality: develop a taste for reading in after-school settings, reinforce reading skills through fun practice, strengthen the intergenerational bond and encourage imagination and creativity in children.
Dedicated spaces
Thus, in this context, spaces dedicated to reading will be set up in the city's after-school centers with books adapted to different reading levels and the children's different interests. Guided reading activities and discussions around books will be regularly organized to encourage children's engagement in reading.
“In addition, specific actions will be periodically organized to arouse children's interest in reading and to promote the discovery of new books: reading sessions lecture aloud by external speakers, reading competitions, theater workshops, meetings with professionals,” concludes the deputy mayor of Vernon.
