The courses, taught by two professional beekeeperswill take place on Saturday mornings with two sessions per month on average. For his second session, the school apiary propose 14 introductory sessionsscheduled between January and August 2025 in (Maine-et-Loire).

Getting started with beekeeping

The City of Saumur encourages raises awareness about beekeeping and highlights the importance of bees for the balance of ecosystems. In 2023, this commitment materialized through the creation of the school apiary “The bees of the Castle”, a device intended to introduce residents to the practice of beekeeping.

Installed in the exceptional setting of Saumur Castle, the school apiary consists of 12 rubles each housing around 60,000 bees. The first training session welcomed 20 participants.

Twenty places will be available for this second session.

  • January 18,
  • February 1 and 22,
  • March 8 and 22,
  • April 5 and 26,
  • May 17 and 24,
  • June 14 and 28,
  • July 5 and 26, August 2, 2025.

Course program:

  • Module 1: Introduction and regulatory framework
  • Module 2: Bee biology and colony behavior
  • Module 3: Beekeeping equipment
  • Module 4: Installation and visit to the hive (practical and theory)
  • Module 5: Health practices: diseases, dangers and poisonings (practice and theory)
  • Module 6: Bee products and harvesting techniques (practice and theory)
  • Module 7: Apiary management and end of season activities (practice and theory)
  • Module 8: Discovery of the beekeeping industry
  • Module 9: Final evaluation.

How to participate?

The school apiary is open to all adults wishing to acquire fundamental knowledge and practices in beekeeping.

  • Prices: €220.50 for residents of Saumur and delegated municipalities. €262.50 for residents outside Saumur.
