As of this Monday, November 18, the city of Paris is launching work to redevelop the Butte Montmartre. This emblematic place, popular with tourists and Parisians, has seen its first construction barriers installed. This work, which will last until August 31, 2025are part of the program “ Beautify your neighborhood », an ambitious project launched in 2021 by the City of Paris to rethink urban spaces for the benefit of quality of life. Montmartre, selected from the start of this initiative, now benefits from a series of developments which mark a new stage in the metamorphosis of the district.
The objectives are clear: Increased vegetation, expanded pedestrianizationaddition of cycle pathsand replacement of street furniture. Among the key measures is the permanent removal of parking lots on the Buttea decision which sparks debate, but is part of the desire to reduce the role of cars in favor of soft mobility. Added to this is the installation of new signage, the creation of specific parking spaces for bicycles and the implementation of ground markings.
During the duration of the work, the neighborhood will experience several temporary changes :
- The installation of barriers to secure the roads under construction;
- The occasional closure of certain streets to allow road markings;
- Pedestrian traffic will remain protected and prioritized, while access for emergency vehicles will be guaranteed.
This redevelopment, which will be completed in the summer of 2025, aims to offer residents and visitors of Montmartre more friendly and aesthetic spaceswhile respecting the historical identity of the place. Since 2021, the “Beautify your neighborhood” system has already transformed 42 Parisian neighborhoods, proving its effectiveness in condensing work over a limited period in order to minimize nuisance for local residents.
With the elimination of parking spaces, Montmartre wishes to take a further step towards more sustainable and harmonious urbanization, while leaving room for ecological alternatives such as bicycles and walking.
By redefining the Butte Montmartre, the City of Paris is pursuing its ambition to make its neighborhoods spaces where history, modernity and quality of life coexist harmoniously. A great opportunity for residents to discover their environment in a new, greener and peaceful light.
