As part of President Macron’s visit, a contract was signed between the government of Morocco and TEH2, a joint venture between TotalEnergies and the Eren group. This is a project with a capacity of 1 GW. To be more precise, the Chbaki project involves TEH2, but also two Danish companies: Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its Energy Transition Fund, and AP Møller Capital, through its Emerging Markets Infrastructure Fund. At this stage, it is a preliminary contract to reserve the land. Located near the Atlantic coast, in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, the Chbika project aims to build 1 GW of onshore solar and wind capacity that will power the production of green hydrogen through the electrolysis of desalinated seawater. It will be used to produce 200,000 tonnes per year of green ammonia for the European market. TE H2 and CIP will be in charge of developing the production of renewable energies (solar, wind, green hydrogen and its derivatives). “ This agreement is part of our strategy to develop exportable production in Europe in countries with the most competitive renewable resources such as Morocco.“, comments Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of TotalEneergies. “ Thanks to its geographical proximity and the quality of its wind and solar resources, Morocco has the best assets to become a major partner of Europe in achieving the objectives of the Green Deal and TotalEnergies has the ambition to contribute to it« . « This project will constitute the first phase of a development program aimed at creating a world-class green hydrogen production center“, underlines the press release.
During the President’s visit, there were other agreements concluded between France and Morocco around hydrogen and green ammonia. France Hydrogène has identified them. Thus, the OCP Group and ENGIE have signed a strategic partnership. One of the aspects concerns the development of green ammonia production capacity. The project will in parallel study the feasibility of producing other green hydrogen derivatives, such as e-methanol or e-SAF among others. The agreement was signed by Mostafa Terrab, Chairman and CEO of the OCP Group, and Catherine MacGregor, Managing Director of ENGIE, as part of the French President’s state visit to Morocco. Remember that the OCP Group (Office Cherifien des Phosphates) is the world leader in the phosphate industry and plant nutrition solutions and phosphate-based fertilizers. MGH Energy has concluded the signing of a “strategic protocol” with the Moroccan company OMV Petrom, specializing in fuel distribution. The “Janassim” project, with a budget of €4.8 billion, aims to produce 500,000 tonnes per year of synthetic fuels from 2.2 GW of renewable energies.
The commissioning of a first unit is planned for 2030 in the port of Dakhla Atlantique. Furthermore, HDF Energy submitted a project as part of a call for tenders launched by Morocco for renewable energies. This aims to deploy 2GW of onshore wind power in Dakhla, in Western Sahara. This project, called Nasem Sahara Morocco (NSM), is part of an ambitious approach aimed at supporting local industry, the export of green hydrogen, as well as the sustainable aviation sector. If the project is selected, its first phase over five years would represent “ an investment of one billion euros,” indicated Damien Havard, its CEO, followed by a second phase of 3 billion euros and a third of 7 billion euros“. The first phase of the project aims to produce 200,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year. Here is what Matin.ma says.
The association welcomes the positioning of French players on the international hydrogen market. She also considers that Franco-Moroccan cooperation is entering a new era of innovation and sustainability.
